The American Journal of Pathology, official journal of the American Society for Investigate Pathology (A.S.I.P.), seeks to publish high-quality original papers on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease. The editors accept manuscripts which report important findings on disease pathogenesis or basic biological mechanisms that relate to disease, without preference for a specific method of analysis. High priority is given to studies on human disease and relevant experimental models using cellular, molecular, biological, chemical and immunological approaches in conjunction with morphology.

Publication in The American Journal of Pathology is highly competitive; currently approximately 30 percent of new manuscripts received are eventually accepted for publication. In addition to Review Articles, Commentaries, and other special content, Original Research Articles are categorized in the Table of Contents according to the following research topics: Cardiovascular, Pulmonary and Renal Pathology; Cell Injury, Repair, Aging and Apoptosis; Epithelial and Mesenchymal Cell Biology; Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics and Gene Regulation; Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Pathology; Growth Factors, Cytokines, Cell Cycle Molecules; Immunopathology and Infectious Diseases; Matrix Pathobiology; Metabolic, Endocrine and Genitourinary Pathobiology; Molecular Pathogenesis of Genetic and Inherited Diseases; Musculoskeletal Pathology; Neurobiology; Pharmacogenomics, Gene Therapy and Radiation Biology; Stem Cells, Tissue Engineering and Hematopoietic Elements; Tumorigenesis and Neoplastic Progression; Vascular Biology, Atherosclerosis and Endothelium Biology. Not all topic areas will appear in each issue, as this is dependent on the content of original research accepted for publication.

The American Society for Investigative Pathology is a society of biomedical scientists who investigate mechanisms of disease. Investigative pathology is an integrative discipline that links the presentation of disease in the whole organism to its fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms. It uses a variety of structural, functional and genetic techniques and ultimately applies research findings to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. ASIP advocates the practice of investigative pathology and fosters the professional career development and education of its members.
