The text is written particularly for trainee surgeons to guide them through the operations which they will initially undertake. It provides trainees with the basic knowledge of most specialties and allows them to benefit immediately on joining new units. It is also suitable for surgeons practicing in smaller hospitals where more specialized advice would not otherwise be available, describing the simpler techniques in sufficient detail to allow surgeons of limited experience to operate with safety should the situation demand they proceed.
