This work presents information on how cytokines and chemokines are involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. Basic mechanisms controlling cytokine induction and regulation are reviewed, as well as the resulting production of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. The role of cytokines is examined in autoimmune diseases such as uvetis, encephalomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, SLE, and myasthenia gravis. The potential of cytokine modulation in the treatment of autoimmune diseases is examined.
